Treasured Memories

Helpful Hint CardsThere’s something magical about writing thoughts down and then looking back on them years later, don’t you think? That’s why us moms hang on to tattered homemade birthday cards for decades and refuse to destroy teenage drama-queen diaries that might incriminate us years later. I bring this up because these are the kind of memories that are made with the charming Helpful Hint Advice Cards created by BigDotOfHappiness.com. Designed with the one-of-a-kind graphics that we have come to expect from their expert designers, these 5.5” wide and 3.25” tall cards are printed with quite a few different design choices so that there is one just right for you. I know that Big Dot advertises them as a game or activity to be shared during a shower but I have discovered so many additional uses for them that it is a shame to break them out at the party only to be forgotten in the end.

My favorite way to use them  is to hand one Advice Card to each guest as she arrives and ask her to take a few moments to write down her words of wisdom for the new mom or bride and then hold on to it until it’s time to open gifts. The fun begins when it is time to open presents. An empty chair is placed next to the bride or mom-to-be and the guest whose gift she is opening is instructed to sit next to her in that chair. Before the gift is opened, the guest is encouraged to stand up and read the advice she has written on her card. Not only does this allow the guest to soak in some individual attention but she will also be close at hand to hear the words of praise and see the expressions of delight as her gift is unveiled.  Afterward, all of the cards can be deposited into a basket or recipe card box and presented to the lucky mom or bride as a keepsake of her wonderful celebration. I’ve even heard of hostesses who will punch a hole in the upper left corner of each completed card, string them onto the curling ribbons of a bunch of balloons and present it as a bouquet of advice. I would never have thought of something so amazingly simple yet so amazingly cool. Similar kinds of things can be done with the Fab 5 games as well. Have your guests write their best wishes in the margins of their game cards once they are done using them, tear off that section of the card and then offer them to the mom-to-be or bride as a treasured memento. Just imagine the smiles you will create when those advice cards are sifted through sometime in the future.  It’s enough to make a girl sigh.  *Sigh*
