Antique stores are a great place to find your Something Old. You can also find great gifts for your bridesmaids and other attendants. If you look around and keep your mind open, you’ll be amazed at the great deals you can get on beautiful classics destined to be treasured once again. Here is a list of just a few things I found for my own wedding.
- Handkerchiefs: Every bride and bridesmaid needs to keep one handy for the tears of joy that inevitably fall at any wedding. Many cost less than $5 a piece and are often hand-embroidered. Antique lace is always gorgeous and you often find handkerchiefs with patterns featuring the same flowers in your bridal bouquet.
- Brooches: In lieu of having my train held up by bustle hooks, I purchased a sterling silver brooch embedded with light blue rhinestones, scoring both my Something Old and my Something Blue. The best part? It was only $8! You can purchase a variety of these gorgeous pins in different shapes and sizes for your bridesmaids to wear on any occasion.
- Jewelry: You really have to look, but there are usually beautiful necklaces and earrings that your attendants can wear. Just be careful to look at the clasps to make sure they’re in working order and have them cleaned at a local jeweler (this is often very inexpensive) before they’re worn.
- Knick-knacks: Even if you can’t find a use for them as a centerpiece, the antique store is a great place to find one-of-a-kind items your attendants will cherish in their homes. Not everyone’s gift has to match, after all. A personal touch like a vintage fedora for the fashion-savvy Best Man or 20’s era perfume bottle for the Maid-of-Honor with classic taste shows that you not only appreciate the time they’re devoting to you, but their personal style as well.
Not everything has to be a vintage find, of course. You can complement the gifts you find with new items too. How about a cool flask to go with that fedora, or a personalized set of body butter and lip balm to go with the perfume bottle? The possibilities are endless! Package them together in gift baskets or attendant bags. Happy hunting!
