Back to the Basics Birthday Party

Talk about feeling old!!   Recently I was visiting a friend who has a seven year old son and being the good friend that I am, I attempted to engage him in conversation while his mom stepped out of the room for a moment.  “So, David, what did you do last week when you were on your school break?”  “Nuthin’”, was his disinterested reply.  Ok…time to dig a little deeper.  “Come on..”, I challenged, “You must have done something interesting”.  Finally, I hit pay dirt!  His face brightened as he remembered, “I went to the coolest birthday party ever!  It was for Bobby and we didn’t even go anywhere.  His mom made all the food and we played party games and opened presents.  It was totally awesome!”  At first I was a bit amused by his description.  Wasn’t this youngster describing an ordinary, run-of-the-mill  birthday party scenario?  Having aroused my curiosity, I questioned his mom about her son’s comments when she returned.  Turns out, children’s birthday parties have changed quite a bit since the time my kids were young.  Gone are the days of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs, hot dogs and ice cream and cake.  In their place are manicures and facials at the spa, personal trainers at the indoor sports center and swimming sessions at the local hotel.  How refreshing, then, to hear a child’s perspective about how delightfully different a home party can be.   Moms of the world, take note:  Stock up on some of our fabulous birthday party tableware and birthday party invitations that are featured on SimplyBirthdayStuff.com ,  bake a cake, decorate with mylar and latex balloons, organize a game of tag and see what happens.  You just might be surprised at how well this kind of party is received.
