When it comes to creating a festive party atmosphere, few things compare to colorful party bunting. Those cheerful little flags have been popping up more and more in recent years as crafty people the world over have embraced bunting and begun creating beautiful cloth versions of the classic party décor. With this simple tutorial, you too can enjoy the festive look of party bunting, minus the often heavy price tag—even if you’re not an accomplished seamstress! 

DIY Party Bunting

Materials:

-A long length of ribbon, yarn, ric-rac, or other “string”
-Sheets of felt in various colors
-Craft glue or No-Sew glue (optional)
-Thin cardboard or tag board to create a triangle template 

To begin, you’ll need to decide how large you’d like your flags to be. Using a ruler, draw your desired triangle shape on a piece of thin cardboard, and then cut it out to become your flag template. (Alternately, you can do an internet search for triangle templates and simply print one out.) 

Once you’ve created your template, trace and cut as many triangle flags as you’d like from your colored felt. When all of your flags are cut out, you can begin attaching them to your ribbon. Leaving 12-15 inches of ribbon free at the end, attach the first flag by spreading glue across the top edge of the triangle and pressing it securely onto the ribbon. If you’d rather not work with glue, you can cut two or three slits near the top edge of the triangle and weave the ribbon through the flag. 

Continue attaching or weaving flags onto the ribbon, in the color order you desire, leaving at least 1 inch between each flag (or more if you’d like a longer bunting.) Be sure to leave 12-15 inches on the other end of the ribbon as well for easy hanging.

That’s it! All that’s left is to hang up your party bunting in just the perfect place, step back, and smile at your cleverness.

If you are handy with a needle and thread, you can easily stitch your flags onto your ribbon. If you’d like to use a sewing machine, you can attach each flag by sewing a continuous line of stitches along the length of your ribbon, inserting your flags at the appropriate intervals.
