The Gift of Utility: Making the Most of Your Baby Shower Registry

Monday, March 29th, 2010

It would be wonderful if you got everything you needed for your baby at your baby shower. It rarely happens though. When you become pregnant, your mind fills with images of chubby cheeks, sticky kisses, and precious layettes. People tell you to wait until after to shower to shop, to avoid returns, because “you will get everything you need”. This is often untrue. Unfortunately, not everything you need (or even things you asked for) will come from your baby shower. So how do help guide your loved ones towards the useful gifts rather than 8-foot stuffed dragons that will your baby before they play with it?

Here are a few things you can do so that requests are polite, but your message clear.

1. Register at places other than Babies R Us and Carter’s. A lot of people feel too intimidated by the prices and will end up having to guess (hence the huge stuffed dragon that your baby will scream at the sight of, rather than cuddle with). Target and JC Penney both have gift registries that are accessible both in-store and on-line.

2. If you are in on your shower planning, or at least know who will be throwing it for you, request one of our Diaper Cakes. Not only are they elegant and beautiful, they’re affordable and made of high quality, usable diapers.

3. Ask one of your friends to be involved in the planning of your shower, if at all possible. Many friends tend to listen to your requests better than family members who may not know you as well as they think you do. Having a friend as your shower liaison ensures that people of different income levels will be referred to the appropriate registry (if this is necessary) so that your requests are more likely to be honored.

4. Know what you want… and don’t ask for it. Well, don’t ask everybody. Think of what you want and/or need. When people ask you what you want for the baby, tell each person something different. You can tell two people the same thing, but no more than that. It is when you tell everyone that you want a Diaper Genie that you end up with four of them. If you don’t get the Diaper Genie at all, and you want it that badly, you’ll buy it anyway.

5. Know the specific keepsakes that you want and aim for functional, personalized ones. Big Dot of Happiness has Mommy- and Daddy-to-be gifts that are useful, affordable, and keepsake-worthy. Go for the Advice Cards, which act as both a party activity for your guests and indispensable knowledge for you.

6. Keep your registries updated. Many retailers mark a product on your list when it has been purchased. Unfortunately, not everyone pays attention. Yes, it will ruin the surprise, but it keeps you from endless returns and exchanges. Another option is to give a friend your password and let her (or him) monitor the gifts, deleting what is no longer needed.

Don’t let this stuff scare you. A screaming infant at four a.m. is imposing enough, after all. The most important thing about a shower is not the gifts, it’s the parents-to-be and celebrating the joy of a new life with family and friends.

Definite Musts for Your Baby Registries

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Most registries feature helpful lists of favorite items for your baby registry. If they don’t, however, people sometimes forget the most essential items. Here are some items you will definitely don’t want to forget to add.

  • Bottles/Nipples: It’s easiest if you ask for an assortment in the same style. That way, you never have to worry which cap fits which bottle.
  • Diapers: From Newborn to Size 1, disposable or cloth, you can never have enough in the first months. Our diaper cakes make a great shower centerpiece and are a good way to get your supply started. And don’t forget the wipes!
  • Receiving Blankets: Perfect for swaddling baby or a substitute burping cloth. These are also great for warm nights when only a light covering is needed.
  • Hooded Bath Towels: Not only cute, but indispensable for keeping your freshly washed baby warm from head to toe after bath time.
  • Pacifiers: Unless you choose not use them, you can never have enough of them. Keep a spare in your car, purse, and each room of the house. As your baby grows older, you will marvel at how easily they disappear under couches or other random spots in your home.
  • Portable Playpen: The best ones come with a detachable changing table/bassinet, making baby care easy when you’re on-the-go visiting family and friends’ homes.
  • Clothes in Multiple Sizes: Babies grow faster than you know, so having clothes ready when it happens is a big help.
  • Extra Crib Sheets: If you have a particular pattern in mind for your baby’s crib set, ask for sheets in colors that will go with the set.
  • ExerSaucer: You won’t use it for a few months, but once your baby can hold his or her head up (around 4 months or so), it will be essential!
  • Baby Swing: The fold-and-go variety is most convenient because you can move it around the house or take it with you for visits. There are many different styles to choose from (with toys, vibration, etc.), but even the most no-frills model is an asset.

Don’t forget to check out our baby shower gift ideas, which feature everything from layettes to embroidered caps, which you can personalize, for baby. We also carry gifts for Mom, Dad, and siblings to celebrate their roles in your new addition’s life. Enjoy shopping!

Heirloom Baptism/Christening Gown on a Budget

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

If there isn’t one your family already uses for babies in the family, Baptism/Christening gowns are expensive, ranging from $40 to several hundred. Buying one at Goodwill or Salvation Army can feel impersonal, as if you’re buying someone else’s memories. However, if you choose to go that route, make your own, or even purchase one at Wal-Mart or Target, there are several things you can do to dress it up and truly make it your family’s own.

  1. Use some fabric from your wedding dress to make the gown or add a layer to the one you purchase. If you are afraid of destroying it for future use by your daughter, or future daughter-in-law, try using a piece of lace or a strip of tulle from an under-layer of the skirt. If you’re not handy with a needle, use a diaper pin (they’re safer), going underneath with the head so it doesn’t show.
  2. Print a poem written by you or a family member, celebrating the occasion, onto an iron-on transfer (you can use your home printer for this). Iron that transfer onto the inside of the gown. Just make sure that the gown’s fabric is iron-safe and can, literally, take the heat. Alternatively, you can use inexpensive cotton and attach it by sewing or pinning it to the gown.
  3. Is there a pair of stud earrings that have been in your family for years? Stick them to the gown as an accessory. Put a piece of fabric tape over the backs so they don’t stick your baby’s skin.
  4. For a few dollars at your local tailoring/embroidery shop, you can have your baby’s monogram, family name, or a favorite religious reference embroidered on the gown.
  5. Ask family members that attend the ceremony to sign a white piece of fabric that matches or accents the gown with a silver fabric pen. Before or after the ceremony, you can sew or pin the fabric to the gown so that those you share the day with will always, truly, be a part of the gown. You can alter this idea by having it signed by those who are in the delivery room or recording the names/birthdays of babies baptized/christened in the gown.

Make sure that any colors of fabric, thread, or ink (for the writing/transfers) are okay with your religious official. You definitely don’t want to customize a beautiful gown and then find out that it doesn’t jive with your faith’s observances.

Be sure to enjoy the ceremony. At the end of the day, no one will ask you how much the gown cost or judge you on how much time/effort you spent on it. They will be too focused on the event itself and your beautiful baby. You should be, too.

Don’t forget to check out Big Dot of Happiness for the invitations, decorations & favors, even gifts! (My personal favorite is the Easel Frame. It’s a classic, gorgeous way to keep the memory.) Everything is affordable, just one more way to make your baby’s big day special without breaking the bank!
